What is Net Metering?
Net Metering is a program carried out by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008 (RA 9513), otherwise known as the “Act Promoting the Development, Utilization and Commercialization of Renewable Energy Resources.”
It allows Member-Consumer-Owners (MCOs) with renewable energy facilities such as solar, wind, biomass, or biogas energy systems not exceeding 100 kW to export the electricity that they were not able to consume to PELCO II. Its corresponding value will then be deducted from the end-user’s electricity monthly bill (equivalent to PELCO II’s blended generation cost, excluding other generation adjustments) to generate savings in the process and protect themselves against rising electricity prices.
How does it work?
Under this program, you still import or purchase electricity from PELCO II when your renewable energy-generating system cannot fully meet your power requirements. Usually, this happens in the nighttime when the panels cannot generate electricity. However, during the daytime when the solar panels generate electricity more than what you need, the excess electricity generated is exported to the grid.
When you apply for Net Metering, your current meter with a bi-directional meter. The bi-directional meter measures the import and export of electricity to and from the establishment.
